So i loose my job come May. (it seems so close!!) This position has moved from temp to student. There is not enough work for a full time or even part time employee. I will no longer be a student and this is only a student position. :__: I got to start putting together a web page and dvd and mounted portfolio. I know i should have started to work on this around christmas/new years but i just have not been motivated. The thought of loosing my job in this economy is frightening.

Does anyone have any suggestions on resume, marketing myself, designing a webpage for me, webpages to find jobs, etc

thanks!

Follow-up post:

I'm thinking about going to MINT Saturday for their $5 show (buncha bands, I have no idea, the headliner's sound is weird in a mellow fairytale woodland creature sort of way) and to see the current artwork on the walls.

Fellow creatives are welcomed to join me!

What are some local places you go for inspiration as a Creative?

I recently visited WonderRoot and was totally blown away. What a great community center. Interesting art on the walls, good design in their promotional work.

Also their buddy, Mint gallery--I can't wait to see this place. I missed the last opening.

I've found that "graphic design" things don't tend to inspire me so much as interior design, performance and art do. Graphic Design tends to be so self-appreciative, it doesn't reach out as much. I think design needs fuel from other creative sources to keep itself fresh or it just keeps recycling trends.

In graphic design, what is your weakest area?

I freely admit mine is typography.

Hey Everyone,
I am looking for ANY information on either Portfolio Center or the Creative Circus. Did you go there and love/hate it? What kind of reputations do they have? Etc. Etc. Anything and everything will be appreciated!

what do you do when your boss asked the impossible.....or just a project that they estimate should take you a day or so when she has no idea that its going to take a week? You explain why it is going to take so long but she just can't comprehend that.

Hey there. :)

Do you know about any portfolio review groups or resources in ATL? I'm looking to apply to design programs in the US and Canada (and a couple abroad, too) for fall '09. The deadlines are all in early-mid January, so I have time, but not a ton.

The reason I'm asking is that I have virtually no design contacts in Atlanta.

I did media/technology studies (focusing on design) at Georgia Tech and graduated a few years ago, worked briefly as a contract web designer, spent a couple of years teaching English abroad, and am now working in town again as the only visual designer in my 700-person company.

The profs I studied with have all left Atlanta and I maybe have a few friends from school and the web design job who can look over my stuff...but I'd like a more authoritative view, especially from someone who's familiar with the rigors of grad school acceptance.

My design education has been primarily self-taught and self-guided, and in looking around at other designers' work, I'm feeling pretty anxious about my work...especially since I'm primarily a web designer who's come into print work in the last few years, and since I've never prepared a non-web-based portfolio before. How do you present websites in a printed portfolio, anyway?

I also haven't joined AIGA because I didn't think it'd do me much good as a web designer...however, I will be signing up in the next couple of days (once I see if my company will comp the membership fee).

Sorry for the rambling...I would love any advice you can offer. Please be kind. Thanks so much!
